The Republic of Ireland U19 team suffered a comprehensive 3-0 defeat by Slovenia in a friendly international at the RSC tonight.

Paul Doolin’s side seldom found their best form but had an early chance when Cork City’s Alan Browne set up Sam Byrne in the third minute but the Manchester United striker’s low shot from edge of box saved by goalkeeper Gregor Zabret.

The visitors took the lead when Dino Hotic curled home a brilliant free-kick from 20 yards out in the 14th minute.

It was 2-0 in the 43rd minute when Bian Paul Sauperl produced a thumping drive from just outside the box that bounced down off the crossbar but the officials deemed it had crossed the line before Luka Zahovic followed up on the rebound.

The third goal came in the 53rd minute when Zahovic produced a brilliant low cross for Luka Gajic to tap home from close range.

Ireland will host the Slovenians again on Thursday at the same venue (1pm).
