Geddis the front-runner as Cork’s hunt for new boss continues
Ex-Ipswich Town player, David Geddis is the front-runner to take over at Cork City according to club owner Tom Coughlan.
The property developer is quoted in tonight’s edition of the Evening Echo as saying that Geddis “remains front runner for the job”.
In the past, Geddis was a scout for Sven Goran-Eriksson during the Swedes tenure as England manager. While he was also on the coaching staff at Leeds United up until 2006.
Coughlan had wanted to speak to Morecambe boss, Sammy McIlroy. However, Shrimpers Chief Executive, Rod Taylor has denied Cork permission to speak to the former Northern Ireland player.
"We had a phone call today from Cork City asking if they could speak to Sammy about their manager's position but we have denied them permission to approach him.'' Taylor said.
While McIlroy has also confirmed that he is settled in Morecambe and doesn't want to uproot. "I am glad that people like Cork are thinking of me but my heart is set here at Morecambe" admitted the ex- Manchester United captain.
Cork’s players are scheduled to return to pre-season training in 10 days and it is hoped that a new manager will be appointed by then.
Meanwhile, it is believed that some of the clubs out of contract playing staff, such as Colin Healy and Michael Devine, are growing restless as negotiations have yet to begin on offering them new terms.
Devine, is the most experienced player in the squad but may be tempted to return to Waterford if negotiations do not begin in the next couple of days.
While Healy is out of contract since the end of the season and has yet to meet with Coughlan to discuss a new contract. The former Irish international is still admired greatly cross-channel and if talks do not begin soon it wouldn’t be surprising to see him have another crack at English football.
