Buckley pleased with League performance against Shels
Saint Patrick’s Athletic manager Liam Buckley felt his side's performance in their 1-0 win over Shelbourne on Friday night was better than in their previous game, when they beat Shamrock Rovers 4-0.
“I thought the performance was probably better than last week actually. We created quite a few chances this evening and only scored the one goal. I thought Shels were fairly well organised and they defended well. That said, we did create quite a lot of chances and just bagged the one goal. It was important that we scored first.”
Buckley also highlighted the importance of an outstanding save from Brendan Clarke to deny Dean Kelly when the game was scoreless.
“In fairness to Brendan Clarke he made one really top save but other than that I don't remember them having another chance. It was early in the game at that stage. That is what Brendan is there for. He has made plenty of them so far this season. That said I thought we outplayed them. We kept the ball quite well. Bar them playing a long ball or getting a bit of luck, I'm not sure where they were going to score from.”
Saint Pats dominated most of the the second half, but couldn't add another goal. Their manager admitted to feeling nervous that an equalizer might come.
“You feel nervous because... it could hit somebody on the back of the head or whatever. It didn't happen this evening. I thought we merited our win. We are moving on and we've got a cup game next week which we are looking forward to, bearing in mind last year's disappointment in that competition. We are going to try and get through Bray as best we can.”
