Monaghan United 2-0 Waterford United
Monaghan United brought the curtain down on their 2008 season with a home victory over a dismal Waterford United at Kingspan Century Park on Saturday night.
Andy Haran set Monaghan on their way midway through the first half when he fired home from the edge of the area. The game was then finished as a contest just one minute after the half time interval when midfielder Sean Brennan sublimely volleyed home from just inside the area.
Willy John Kiely twice went close for the visitors in the second half, while Haran, Daragh Hanaphy and substitute Kieran Reilly all passed up decent opportunities to extend Monaghan’s lead in the closing stages.
Despite the defeat, Waterford clung on third place due to the fact that Sporting Fingal could only manage a draw away to Wexford Youths.
