David McMillan relishing Sligo challenge

After completing his move to the current Premier Division champions Sligo Rovers, Dave McMillan took time out to speak to Extratime.ie about his deal, the terms attached to it and his reasons behind the move. 

After returning from Brisbane, McMillan signed for UCD with a view to moving on from the Students should the chance arise. The new Sligo centre forward explained the terms of his move to UCD and, in turn, his transfer to the Showgrounds.

"I had an agreement with UCD that when I signed back last July, it would be for one year and if the opportunity came about for me to move on, both parties would be happy with that. Obviously a couple of clubs knew about that and I took a couple of calls. I took my time over it and eventually decided on Sligo Rovers."

Despite the headlines citing brotherly love, Dave admits he always tries to put that behind him and concentrate on his own game.

"I try my best to forget about that really. It had to be the right move for me and the team for me, with regards how they play and how I play. It's great that he's here and he probably signed for many of the same reasons I did, but I didn't pick Sligo because he was here."

Sligo Rovers haven't been stuck for goals this season with the early goalscoring run of Anthony Elding as well as having the promise of more firepower from the returning Danny North. Aaron Greene and Raffaele Cretaro also provide Sligo with excellent threats, but McMillan insists he isn't there just to make up the numbers.

"You can only become a better player with that kind of competition. Anthony has done well this season. We have Danny returning too and Aaron Greene has done very well, but when my chance comes here, I can take it and stay in the team for as long as possible."

With Sligo set to face Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Molde in the Champions League qualifiers, the capture of McMillan arrived in time to register for that competition, with the deadline being in a week's time (July 10).

"The forms went out to the FAI today so I should be all set for that when the time comes around."

In terms of personal goals for the year, McMillan isn't a believer in setting targets.

"I haven't really set goals for myself. I want to get into the team and score goals to stay there. We obviously want to win the league; we're the current champions. We want to get through a couple of rounds in Europe and we're doing well in the cups. We're competing on every front."
