Heary named player of the month for October
Bohemians captain Owen Heary has been named the eircom/Soccer Writers Association of Ireland (SWAI) player of the month for October.
The defender, who played in all five of Bohemians’ league and cup fixtures during the month, becomes the third Gypsies player to pick up the monthly gong this season.
October was the month in which Bohs secured the eircom Premier Division title and also a place in the Ford FAI Cup final with a 3-1 victory over St Patrick’s Athletic, a game in which Heary scored the third goal.
After picking up the award, Heary said: "It's my second time winning this and obviously I'm delighted to get it. We lost to Derry but still lifted the trophy, which was a special achievement. It's always nice to win a personal award but everything we've done this season has been a team effort. There have been plenty of outstanding candidates in our squad to win an award like this. Gary Deegan has been immense since joining and Brian Murphy has been incredible in goal. As a defender it's great knowing you have someone of his quality playing at the top of his game supporting you.”
Deegan was the recipient of the player of the month award for September, with Killian Brennan named the league's top player in May.
Heary and his Bohs’ teammates finish up their league campaign against Cork City at Dalymount Park on Friday night. That will be followed on Sunday week by the cup final against Derry City at the RDS. Speaking ahead of the Cork game, Heary added: "All the lads are desperate to play in the final against Derry City so competition for places is great and that will show against Cork. That's a really great thing to have at any club. But there's a possibility of winning a double and we're certainly hoping we beat Derry and close the season out on a high.”
