Killian Brennan bags May POTM Award
The Airtricity/Soccer Writers Association of Ireland Player of the Month award for May has been presented to St Patrick’s Athletic midfielder Killian Brennan.
The third recipient of the 2013 Airtricity League season crowned a memorable month for his club, as the Inchicore outfit enjoyed a SWAI one-two-three. Brennan pipped St Patrick's Athletic team-mate Christy Fagan who came second, while another fellow Richmond Park fan favourite, John Russell, was third.
Brennan began the month in style, and on familiar territory, in his native Drogheda with a stoppage time spot-kick to see off Drogheda United. That result followed on from another win away from, at the very start of May against Cork City at Turners Cross. After that Brennan bagged another penalty in a win, and against another old club, at Bohemians towards the end of the month, and he then struck in a convincing win over UCD.
Brennan played no small part in Pat’s six match unbeaten run which saw them win five times and draw just once, against his previous club Shamrock Rovers.
“I’ve felt as if I’ve been playing well. While chipping in with a few goals is always nice, our performances have been good and as a team we are flying at the moment” said Brennan.
“It’s a great award to win as they don’t come too easy. As well as we have played this season, I feel there would have been a number of my teammates in the running for this award alongside me.”
In winning Brennan has bridged a gap of almost a year with Chris Fagan the last St Pat’s player to win the prize in July 2012, and Chris Forrester took the accolade earlier that year, in April 2012.
Brennan is now joint eighth in this seasons scoring charts domestically, and like teammate Forrester has a hefty half dozen goals to his name, with St Pat’s averaging almost three goals a game throughout the month of May.
It’s exactly five years since Brennan bagged a SWAI Player of the Month Award; in May 2008 he won the same prize while a Bohemians player. Interestingly, the Gypsies went on to land the title that same season.
“Five years is a long time to wait to win this award again, but it just goes to show how hard it is to win. This year we have a great bunch of lads who are willing to train hard every day to try and achieve our goals. That goal right now is to win every game we can and try and stay in the mix until the end of the season, confidence all around the club is high at the moment so long may that continue.”
After Friday’s trip to his home county and Dundalk, Brennan can enjoy a two week break before Bray Wanderers travel to face the league-leaders.
