Wexford Youths -v- Mervue United

Wexford Youths will be glad to get back to Ferrycarrig Park this Friday for their encounter with an invigorated Mervue United. (KO 8pm)

The reason for the dash to home comforts stems from two successive away defeats to Longford Town and Finn Harps. In fairness to Shane Keegan’s side, they were playing two of the better teams in the league and there’s certainly no shame in that.

Another motive however is their home record this season. In the league Youths has only lost two games in Wexford and are undefeated in their last three. In the EA Cup Cork City came away from Wexford’s beautiful surroundings with a comprehensive 4-0 win but that is a mere blip on the map.

In April Keegan’s side travelled to Galway but left Fahy’s Field baffled as to how Mervue scored three goals in eight minutes to help clinch a 4-1 home win. The game was scoreless at half-time and, even after Mervue’s opener, Youths struck an equaliser but the home side let loose and it began to rain goals in the west.

MERVUE UNITED

Mervue United returned to winning ways last weekend with a first win in five after they overcame Cobh Ramblers 1-0 at Fahy’s Field.

Johnny Glynn side’s next step is to improve on their poor away record of only one win this season. Draws have dominated their results but they did travel all the way to Waterford and thumped the home side 4-0.

There was more good news for the Galway side on the injury front as Alex Lee, Gary Curran and Jason Molloy all trained this week and are expected to feature at some stage. The rehabilitation of club captain Tom King looks complete and the winger looks set to be named on the team sheet in his usual right midfield position.

As usual Glynn was anticipating a tough encounter with the hosts but called on his own troops to end this phase of the season with a win.

“We can expect a tough challenge against Wexford on Friday night as they are going well, particularly at home having won four of their six games at Ferrycarrig Park. We will be looking to end series two on a winning note and head into the mid-season break in good form.”
