Kenny - Dundalk were deserved winners
Following his side’s 1-0 win over champions Sligo Rovers on Tuesday night, Dundalk manager Stephen Kenny sent out a warning that the Lilywhites are in the top four and they’re not going anywhere.
Speaking to Extratime.ie, a thrilled Stephen Kenny said: “There is a top four, and there’s no doubt we’re in it. We’re not going away.”
The Louth side became the first team to take all three points away from The Showgrounds this year after putting in an impressive performance against the Bit o’Red. An excellent Dane Massey goal proved enough to secure the win.
“It’s a big win, Sligo haven’t been beaten here in two years in a game of consequence, we knew we were going to have to put in an extraordinary performance to win. We did that. It was an excellent performance. We deserved it."
Dundalk were guilty of wasting a number of excellent chances, and missed a penalty late on. Although Kenny was disappointed they didn’t make the most of their opportunities, he was delighted with the performance.
“I think we played well, we had a lot of chances, we got a great goal, Keith Ward hit the bar, John Mountney then had the one-on-one and we then missed a penalty so you never know. Sligo were always dangerous but we’re deserved winners. “
The Lilywhites are firmly in the top four now, six points ahead of Shamrock Rovers in fifth. Kenny feels his side have surprised a lot of people this year.
“I think many people probably had us down there with Shelbourne and Bohemians at the start of the season, that we could go out. They’re good teams, they’ve good players. We’ve managed to get six away wins out of seven. We’re doing well.”
