O'Brien resigns as Waterford Utd manager

Waterford United have confirmed that manager Paul O'Brien has resigned from his position.

The club have struggled this season and sit third from bottom in the First Division table with just three wins from 11 league games. The club confirmed that O'Brien, who has been under severe pressure due to poor results, offered his resignation before Friday night's defeat to Wexford Youths and that his offer has been accepted by the management committee.

The Blues thanked O'Brien for his hard work over the past five years at the club and said that no interim manager has been put in place. An announcement would be made in the coming days.

Waterford United added that they see a coaching role for Paul within the club structures in the future.

O’Brien took over midway through the 2011 season after the sacking of Stephen Henderson. O’Brien’s side finished fifth, 27 points behind eventual winners Cork City.

Last season saw O’Brien in his full season as Blues manager and despite a slow start to the season, they finished in second place, four points behind winners Limerick. The Blues beat Longford Town in the First Division play-off but lost to Dundalk over two legs in the promotion decider.
