King names Ireland U21 squad

One Airtricity League player has been confirmed in Noel King’s Republic of Ireland U21 squad along with five other home-based players who have been invited to train with the squad ahead of this month’s friendly in Denmark.

21-year-old Barry McNamee of Derry City has been confirmed in the squad alongside Bohemians’ Roberto Lopes, David O’Leary of Limerick, Finn Harps man Ciarán Gallagher and the Cork City duo of Daryl Horgan and Danny Morrissey, who have been invited to train with the squad and may travel to Denmark.

McNamee is the only League of Ireland player confirmed in the squad as well as being the only uncapped player. The other five players that have been invited to train with the squad are also uncapped and will be joined by Selcuk Tidim of FC Hansa Rostock II.

Ireland will face the Danes in the Fredericia Stadium in Fredericia on the 31st May as part of their final preparations before the start of qualifying for UEFA Euro 2012.

The Boys in Green’s first qualifier will take place in Torshavn on the 14th August when they take on the Faroe Islands.

The most experienced player in the squad is Everton’s Shane Duffy who has won twelve caps for Ireland as well as making his debut for The Toffees first team this season.

Speaking today, King said ‘This is our last preparation game before our first EURO 2015 Qualifier against the Faroe Islands in August, so it’s obviously our final chance to see players before then. Some players are missing through injury, suspensions etc, but this could be the case in August also, so we’ll prepare with that in mind.’

The squad will begin training on the 26th May and travel to Denmark three days later.
