Dundalk manager Stephen Kenny told Extratime.ie that his side were not at their best against Shamrock Rovers on Monday night but that Sean O'Connor's match winning goal on the stroke of half time was a crucial point in the game.

“I think it wasn't our best performance tonight. I think the defensive reshuffle we had before kick-off didn't help us with Mark Rossiter missing. John Sullivan had to go in and play at centre back but the goal on 47 minutes was a crucial turning point in the game because even though Rovers had a very good spell we had weathered that storm I felt and had a few chances ourselves.”

Kenny was disappointed with the way that his team defended in the build up to the goal.

“We should have dealt with the cross and we should have dealt with it in the box. It was a bad goal but we kept going and we were still in the game until the end. We missed some good chances but they missed a lot so we will dust ourselves down and go again on Friday.”

The former Shamrock Rovers manager was also left to rue a couple of missed opportunities for his side mainly from Tiernan Mulvenna and Patrick Hoban. Commenting on Mulvenna's miss in the last 10 minutes

Kenny said “It looked like it was a great chance. Pat Hoban had a great chance as well so it's just one of those things.”

Overall Kenny is very positive about his side's points tally after 12 games of the league season.

“It's been a brilliant start for the team and a whole lot better than everyone expected.  A lot of players are largely improving. They've done brilliant with 21 points from the first series of games. We've got to back it now this series. That's the challenge. We'd love to get into the top half of the table. After that we will see.”
