Rob Rogers will take charge of Saturday’s Setanta Sports Cup Final between Drogheda United and Shamrock Rovers at Tallaght Stadium (3pm, live on Setanta Sports).

The 29-year-old will be joined by assistant referees Mark Gavin and Michelle O’Neill while Derek Tomney and Tómas Connolly will be the Additional Assistant Referees and Brendan Kelly will act as Fourth Official. The Referee Observer will be Michael Ross from the Irish FA.

This is Rogers first major eleven-a-side final but he has plenty of experience of taking charge of big Futsal games at home and abroad and has the distinction of being Ireland’s first ever FIFA Futsal Referee.

Now in his 12th year as a match official, Rogers refereed in the South Dublin Football League and Leinster Senior League before joining the Elite Referees Panel in 2005 on his graduation from the FAI School of Excellence.

After completing UEFA’s CORE programme for up and coming elite referees in 2011, Rogers received his FIFA Referees Badge in 2012 and has refereed European U17 and U19 Championship qualifying matches, Europa League games and a FIFA World Cup qualifier between San Marino and Montenegro.

“This is my first domestic final at any level so I was really thrilled to get the call and I’m looking forward to the game,” said Rogers.

Saturday’s final will also feature Additional Assistant Referees and Rogers, who fulfilled that role in the semi-final first leg between Shamrock Rovers and Cork City, believes they are a great help to the referee.

“It’s definitely a deterrent and a big assistance to the referee in the penalty area at set-pieces as well as being another set of eyes in a critical area when there is a swift counter-attack.”
