Cork Women 1- 2 Wexford Youths

Birthday girl Maria Delahunty helped Wexford Youths Women’s get back to winning ways on Wednesday evening as she opened the scoring at Turner’s Cross in a tightly-contested game against Cork Women’s FC.

The skilful midfielder, who was celebrating her 21st birthday, got John Flood’s team off the mark on 25 minutes with a superb finish after good play by Ciara Rossiter to set her up.

But their lead didn’t last for long. On 38 minutes, Cork hit back through striker Lynsey McKey, whose shot took a big deflection and looped over Wexford goalkeeper Mary Rose Kelly to send the teams in at the break level at 1-1.

Targeting their ninth win of the season, the visitors stepped things up in the second half and went back in front when Linda Douglas’ shot took a deflection before crashing into the back of the net.

Cork had chances to level the game for a second time with Denise O’Sullivan, Lauren Murphy, Laura Lynch and McKey all going close, but Wexford held on to pick up the three points.
