Blues putting things right - Breen
Waterford United captain David Breen believes that his team haven’t done themselves justice this season, but believes that they are putting it right after three league wins from their last four league games.
Last weekend saw The Blues win 1-0 against Ballybofey to continue their rise up the First Division table, and speaking after the game, Breen was delighted to get the win.
“It’s absolutely brilliant to start the second series of games with victory and that’s what we aim for to be honest. We knew that we didn’t put it right in the first series of games and we want to change all that. We haven’t done ourselves justice at all to be honest.
“It’s nice when it all comes together. We’ve been working hard at it to be honest with you now. Its nights like this that we really enjoy it because this is a really tough place to come away to and get any type of result.
“I thought that we dug in great, kept our shape and you couldn’t fault a man here because we really fought for everything here tonight. I thought as you said, we got our just rewards for our efforts but there is still room for improvement.
“We got a good goal and it was a good finish in the end. I’m not going to say that we could have won by more because they had a couple of chances. It was a tight game and that’s the way we wanted it. I would have been happy with a draw here tonight but thankfully we’ve gotten all three.
The win sees a poor start to the season become a decent start and the good start to the second series of matches should help to get more points on the board.
“We’ve come up here tonight and I suppose people didn’t fancy us coming up here – justified with the way our results have gone but we’re on a little run. That’s four games now that we’ve put together.
“As I said last week that’s the important thing. Last week was a great point especially with the chances that Cobh had at the end so now we’ve got four points from the past two games but for now, it’s a great start to the second series.
Breen felt that the workrate was important to get the points against Harps and that work in training was beginning to pay off.
“I thought that the two lads worked hard up front for us tonight when chances were at a premium. We’ve been working hard in training as I’ve already said. We’ve been working on little patterns of play. I think tonight for the goal, the lads had to get the timing right because it makes a bad ball look like a good ball.
“Some of the balls that were going in last week were similar but we weren’t making the runs, however it paid off for us. I thought the workrate tonight was exceptional.
With a poor start to the season and pressure being mounted on the team and manager, Breen is adamant that the tide is turning and that the players are working hard to change their fortunes.
“Look that’s football as I said. People need to understand that we’re not going to win every game every week. We’re going to slip up again at some stage. That’s a given. All we can do is look at our next game and try build on things. We came up here tonight looking for something, we’ve gotten three points.
“We now must look forward to Longford on Friday night at home and that’s going to be a different challenge. We don’t have the best of records against them and they’re a very good side. It’s going to be a very tough game and we’re going to have to battle equally as hard as we done here tonight if we’re to get anything out of the game.
“To a man though. I thought that defensively we were very good, the midfield was strong and the workrate was good. We didn’t make any stupid runs or stupid balls like we have been doing in previous games. We’ve been working on it but there is still more to build on.”
