Kenny thrilled with Dalymount win

Dundalk manager Stephen Kenny has praised the character of his squad after Friday night’s 2-0 win against Bohemians.

Kenny was 'thrilled' with the night's work after a 2-0 win maintained their 100% record on the road with goals in either half from Tiarnan Mulvenna and Richie Towell giving the visitors a deserved three points.

"Absolutely thrilled after that. I didn't really know how the game would go tonight,” Kenny told extratime.ie after the match. “It was such a setback last week, it really left us flat. Dominating a large part of the two games against Derry and Limerick and only getting a point over the two games was difficult to accept.

"For us to go on again to win in Dublin shows that the players are made of something. It shows that they're resilient, determined and they were full value for the three points and I don't think anyone can argue with that."

A clean sheet is always welcome and that was Dundalk's first since the opening night draw with Shamrock Rovers. Kenny confessed he has been disappointed with the goals that have been conceded but is pleased that the team defended well as a unit.

"We're conceding a lot more goals than I would have liked. Goals that I haven't been happy with but tonight we didn't concede any chances and we defended better as a team which was great.

"We needed that clean sheet, thankfully we got it. We created a lot of chances and this team looks like they have goals in them. It looks like they are going to score goals. We have a lot of creative players and we got the job done."

The Lilywhites have now won four consecutive Premier Division games in Dublin for the first time in 32 years, and many other records were set in Dalymount on Friday evening however, the former Derry City boss isn't overly concerned by the stats and fired a warning to everyone - there's more to come.

"I'm not going to get hung up on statistics or anything like that. but I do think that that there is more to come from us and I think we will get better. We're tinkering, even during matches because every match is different and every match has different challenges."

The former Bohemians title winning manager revealed some of his tactical insight before going on to reflect on the importance of having a squad and forward options.

"When you're playing up that hill it can be difficult. We wanted to get the ball down and pass it but on that pitch you couldn't. It can be difficult to get out of your half so we had to change it a little bit into a 4-2-3-1 and got into that system. Pat Hoban came on and gave us fresh legs and also showed that he can play as a number 9."

"It goes to show you the way it works. It started off with Pat Hoban and Kurtis Byrne up front in the first few games and now it is Tiarnan Mulvenna and Vinny Faherty. It shows the value of a squad. We don't have a big squad but we have a lot of attacking options and that is important."
