UCD Waves got their Women’s National League off to a dream start with a convincing 5-1 victory over Cork City Women at Bishopstown on Sunday afternoon. A brace from Aine O’Gorman, combined with goals from Julie-Ann Russell, Eleanor Ryan Doyle and Emily Cahill ensured Eileen Gleeson’s side ran out comfortable victors.
After their first league outing against Wexford Youths was postponed due to tragic circumstances, UCD Waves were playing their first competitive game in four weeks when they travelled to Cork and the away side were first to settle into their stride as Catherine Cronin saw her effort from a Russell cross cannon of the post.
Despite the away side's early dominance, Cork had a promising effort of their own when Saoirse Noonan raced through one-on-one with on goal with Monica McGuirk, but the keeper’s presence saw Noonan fire wide.
Soon after Noonan’s miss, Russell, fresh from helping Ireland to victory in Portugal on Tuesday, had a chance of her own when her shot hit the home side's crossbar. Less than ten minutes later, Russell did break the deadlock after she beat Catherine Cooke before firing low and hard past Trish Fennelly.
With half-time fast approaching, UCD doubled their lead through Eleanor Ryan Doyle before deep in first-half stoppage time Aine O’Gorman added a third when she latched onto a through ball from Orlagh Nolan to fire into the corner of the net.
When the side emerged for the second-half, UCD continued their momentum they built up before the break and less than two minutes after play resumed, O’Gorman grabbed her second of the game after a ball over the top from Cronin.
Despite trailing by four goals, Cork pulled a goal back with ten minutes played in the second-half when Ciara Desmond, who had just been introduced as a substitute was played in by Stacey Paul before beating McGuirk when one-on-one. Less than two minutes later, UCD’s Emily Cahill got what proved to be the final goal of the when she headed home a powerful header.
