Cork City easily defeated Bohemians in tonight’s televised game on Setanta Ireland played at a wet Turner's Cross.
Cork City made one change from the side that drew with Dundalk last Sunday with Colin Healy coming into centre midfield replacing the injured Gavan Holohan who was recently ruled out for a month with a hairline fracture of his ankle.
The visitors made three changes from the side that defeated Derry City last Friday night 4-2. New signing Jake Kelly was joined in the first 11 along with Eoin Wearen and Adam Evans in place of Kealan Dillon, Karl Moore and Paddy Kavanagh.
The sides drew 1-1 in their previous meeting this season up in Dalymount Park where City took the lead through Mark O’Sullivan but Evans equalised late for Bohemians to share the points.
Cork City had the better first half going up two ahead with goals from O’Sullivan one a back heel after three minutes and then the second a free kick from 25 yards on 27 minutes. On top of that they had two shots of the woodwork while Bohemians were left to counter attacks none of which caused Mark McNulty much worry.
The second half wasn’t as exciting a second but City fans won’t mind as a Healy penalty followed by a Morrissey goal gave City the three points with a four goal victory.
The home side who have been playing better since being dumped out of Europe by KR Reykjavik earlier this month.
They got off to a flying start through an O’Sullivan goal on three minutes where he flicked it using his heel past Dean Delaney following a cross from Stephen Beattie.
The ex Avondale United player was causing wreck against the Bohemians defence and Delaney was required to save a header moments later following a Karl Sheppard cross.
Bohemians were relying on counter attacks and Kelly had a shot on 11 minutes that Kevin O’Connor was required to deflect away for a corner.
However O’Sullivan was on fire up front for City and nearly scored with an audacious header with his back to the goal when connecting with Sheppard’s cross but the ball hit the post and was eventually cleared.
Kelly again went close from distance on 18 minutes but O’Sullivan was to score his eight league goal of the season on 27 minutes.
Keith Buckley fouled John Dunleavy when he was running through the middle. Liam Miller then layed the free off to the striker who fired a daisy cutter low into the bottom corner of the St. Anne’s net from 25 yards.
Both sides had further chances in the remainder of the half to get another goal but save for a half chance by Ismahil Akinade and a Gary Buckley shot that hit the crossbar from distance City went in two to the good at the break.
The second half was a lot slower affair in comparison to the opening 45 with save for a half chance from John Dunleavy on 51 minutes there was not a lot to report.
Jake Kelly came closest to an equaliser for the Dublin side on his debut when his free from inside the semi circle smashed off the bar.
However the game was put beyond doubt on 72 minutes when Dave Mulcahy fouled Beattie and up stepped Healy to bury it into the back of the net.
In the final minutes of the game Danny Morrissey scored from 12 yards when after good build up play involving Ross Gaynor and Beattie the ball fell to Morrissey who drilled it low into the net to give City a comprehensive victory ahead of the trip to Sligo next weekend. Bohemians will hope to regroup ahead of the trip to Limerick next weekend.
