Setanta Cup: Glentoran 0 - 0 Shamrock Rovers

Unsurprisingly carrying a 5-1 lead after the first leg of the Setanta Sports Cup quarter-final, and for the day that was in it, Shamrock Rovers progressed past Glentoran at the Oval. 0-0 in this second leg played on St. Patrick’s Day, it was Libyan international Eamon Zayed who went closest to scoring in the first half as the Hoops visited the East Belfast venue for the first time for competitive game in 45 years.
The Hoops striker had two chances that he created for himself in the opening period. After the half hour mark, he flicked the ball by Willie Garrett with his shot pushed behind for a corner by Glens ‘keeper Elliot Morris.
It was the Glentoran captain who again had to be on his toes five minutes before the break to save from Zayed. Simon Madden, raiding down the right all throughout the game, received and returned a pass to Zayed, with Morris having to hold onto his shot.
Zayed had been the provider for the first chance of the game after an error by Mark Clarke after seven minutes. However, Zayed’s cross was headed straight at Morris in the Glens goal by Karl Sheppard. Sheppard was playing alongside Zayed in a 4-4-2 formation in a team showing five changes from Rovers’ 4-1 league win over Athlone Town last Friday.
Glentoran had a gilt edge chance to open the scoring five minutes later. Johnny Addis played a great ball down the left to Curtis Allen, who drifted out from his position up front on his own for the Glens. His cross went to the back post to Jim O’Hanlon but his centre couldn’t be forced home by the arriving Glens midfielders.
Either side of Dean Kelly getting two shots on the Glentoran goal, the home side had a shot from Jordan Stewart that drifted wide of Barry Murphy in the Rovers goal. O’Hanlon then cut nicely across the front of the Rovers defence before getting a shot on target. Just on half-time, Morris again was called into action to save Dean Kelly’s shot, which he pushed around for a corner.
Eddie Patterson’s team went close to grabbing a second leg lead 10 minutes into the second half. Stephen McAlorum’s pass opened up the Shamrock Rovers defence and required Murphy to pull off an excellent save from Clarke’s shot on goal. On the hour mark Gary McCabe, playing wide on the Rovers, danced through the Glens defence and put a delightful ball across the front of the home goal but Sheppard couldn’t get on the end of it.
Chances were few and far between in the second half. It was Allen who woke up the home crowd on 71 minutes with a shot that had Murphy diving full length low to his right to push the ball away. His opposite number then prevented Rovers from scoring as he timed his slide at the edge of the area perfectly to take the ball off Kelly as he ran onto a great ball over the top by Bayly.
Glentoran did have a big shout for a late second half-penalty but they couldn’t break down a Shamrock Rovers defence who have only conceded eight goals in their 14 games played in this competition since they first entered the latest version of this all island competition back in 2011. Next Monday in Tallaght Stadium, Rovers will face Dundalk in the first leg of their fourth Setanta semi-final in four years.
