A Paddy Madden strike separated the teams at Dalymount Park on Friday night, but in truth Bohs never really looked like losing this FAI Ford Cup Fourth round tie.
Bohs started brightly, with their first corner on two minutes signalling the start of a spell of Bohs half-chances. The home side could have scored from their second corner on thirteen minutes, but it went just over the heads of both the Bohs and Shels players and ended up harmlessly wide.
Jason Byrne crossed low for the feet of Paddy Madden on nineteen minutes, but Ian Ryan slid in just in time to deny the striker.
The breakthrough did eventually come after twenty-two minutes through the ex-Shels loanee Paddy Madden. He was left completely alone in the Shels penalty area and volleyed superbly past Dean Delany in the Shels goal after a cross.
The Gypsies were dominant for the rest of the half, with Gareth McGlynn twice going close with headed chances. McGlynn rose highest in the Shels box on thirty-five minutes but his header drifted wide. The ex-Derry player went closer a minute before half time, heading just wide of the far post following another corner.
Shels had a good start to the second half, enjoying a few chances in the minutes after half time. Philip Gorman shot over after a promising run, and moment later was put through alone on goal following a hopeful Gareth Whelan long ball. Gorman tried to drag the ball back for Mark Hughes, and the chance for an equaliser was gone.
Bohs almost went two up on fifty-nine minutes but Mark Quigley shot just wide with a nimble touch. Aaron Greene's header fell short minutes later after Paddy Madden chipped it up for the substitute. Owen Heary had a glorious chance on sixty-four minutes with a diving header from a corner kick but his teammate Gareth McGlynn, on the line, managed to block the ball from going in.
Shelbourne did enjoy some good possession in the final fifteen minutes of the match, but didn't manage to get any clear shots on goal. Bohs restricted them to one long-range effort two minutes in to injury time which was comfortably gathered by Chris O'Connor.
