Buckley laments leaking of goals
“We're just leaking too many goals at the moment” was the reaction from Sporting Fingal manager Liam Buckley after his side went down 3-2 to a late Derek Doyle winner at home to St.Pats on Monday night.
“[We conceded] three against Rovers and three again here this evening, which you can't do if you want to be anywhere near the top of the table” conceded Buckley.
But Buckley said he felt that his side still deserved something from the match: “I think a draw probably would have been a fair result the way the chances went.”
The problem of defensive organisation was clear to the Fingal manager after the match, as he stated that Fingal “need to get the defensive side of our game sorted out. [We conceded] three against Rovers and three again here this evening, which you can't do if you want to be anywhere near the top of the table.”
Fingal sit in fourth position in the Airtricity Premier Division, but the feeling among many fans and pundits is that they could and should be further up the table given how well they have played this season.
Sporting now face into the second defence of their FAI Ford Cup title against Limerick at home on Friday, and Buckley says the FAI Cup holds a special place of affection for his team.
“We'd be looking forward to winning it again if we could,” exclaims the Fingal manager, “it's a great tournament, a great trophy to win. We got huge enjoyment out of beating Rovers up in Tallaght in the replay and in beating Bray and then Sligo in the final. They were all memorable occasions for the club and hopefully we'll have a few more,” he said.
Asked if the tables are turned this season on Sporting- last year they were the plucky underdogs, this year they are the holders- Buckley acknowleded the threat Limerick will pose on Friday.
“Limerick are going well in the First Division- they've brought in a few new recruits. I've no doubt they'll be tough to break down. From our point of view it's our cup, we'd like to retain it.”
