First Division wrap: Galway United trounce Kerry as Waterford return to winning ways

Galway United maintained their impressive start to the season to demolish League of Ireland new boys Kerry 9-1 at Eamonn Deacy Park.

The Tribesmen raced into a 5-0 lead at the break thanks to a hat-trick from Ed McCarthy and a goal each from Rob Slevin and Francely Lomboto.

And while the tide of goals eased off in the second-half, Galway were still able to run out eight-goal winners.

Striker Stephen Walsh netted a late brace after new signing Ibrahim Keita scored two himself for John Caulfield’s side.

Ryan Kelliher scored Kerry’s consolation on the night. But after claiming their first point of the season last week this was a sobering reality check for the Kingdom.

Meanwhile, Cobh Ramblers unbeaten start to the 2023 campaign continued thanks to a 3-0 win against Treaty United at Market’s Field.

Wilson Waweru opened the scoring for Shane Keegan’s side on the hour mark.

Fellow new recruit Jack Doherty netted twice in the space of less than five minutes to seal a big win on the road for the Rams.

They remain just two points behind league leaders Galway United after four games played.

Elsewhere, promotion favourites Waterford collected their second win of the season after a 1-0 win away to Athlone Town.

Shane Griffin’s 15th minute goal was the difference between the side’s as the Blues eased the pressure on boss Danny Searle with their first win since last month.

Longford Town and Bray Wanderers played out a drab 0-0 draw at the Carlisle Grounds while the same result unfolded at Finn Park between Finn Harps and Wexford.
