League Preview: Galway United -v- Treaty United

GALWAY UNITED

Galway United will be looking to keep their perfect start to the season going when they host Treaty United at Eamonn Deacy Park on Friday night (kick-off 7.45pm).

The Tribesmen began their season with a 2-1 win over Finn Harps in difficult conditions at Finn Park last Friday night and they will be hoping to give their home fans something to cheer about on their return to Deacy Park.

New signing Vincent Borden announced himself in the best way possible in his debut for the club with two goals to the American midfielder’s name to begin his time as a Tribesman – his goals crucial in clinching an opening night three points for John Caulfield.

“It’s the first home game of the season so it will be a big night for our supporters,” John Caulfield said, speaking to the club’s media team.

“We need to start brightly as Treaty are well organised, very strong defensively, good on counter-attacks and dangerous on set-pieces.

“It is a local derby – they have a strong Galway contingent in their team so we have to be at our best from the get-go.

“We hope to build on last week’s win against Harps.”

The Tribesmen have a good record against Friday night’s visitors and they should aim to be taking all three points to ensure they don’t lose any ground on Waterford even at this early stage of the season.

TREATY UNITED

Treaty United started their season with a disappointing loss at home to Bray Wanderers last Friday night.

The side looked like they were set to play out a scoreless draw only for Bray substitute Ben Feeney to score in the 89th minute to leave the Limerick side with no points coming into the second week of the season.

As always these games won’t be straight forward for Galway with so many  former Tribesmen in the squad, many of whom had played for John Caulfield and might have a point to prove.

Just last week – five former Galway players started the game for Treaty with Conor Winn in goals and Conor Barry, Stephen Christopher, Marc Ludden and Enda Curran all outfield.

Striker Colin Kelly came off the bench to make his debut for Tommy Barrett side, the forward having made his senior debut for Galway United in 2018.

Such an extensive proportion of former Galway players can add a bit of needle to these fixtures, and with Enda Curran on the scoresheet twice last season against his former club, expect the Galway man to be firing on all cylinders at Eamonn Deacy Park on Friday.
