On the 13th of March 2016, former League of Ireland First Division star Alex Lee was playing for Mervue United in what he thought was just another match.

But during that Connacht Cup clash at Fahy’s Field, Lee broke his leg and his life changed forever.

Six weeks and 14 surgeries later, Alex left hospital in a wheelchair. His right leg had been amputated below the knee.

And just like that, his footballing days were over after at the age of 26.

He made almost 100 League of Ireland First Division appearances and was selected to play for Ireland as a teenager.

Before long, Alex began the tough process of learning to walk again with a prosthetic under the care of the Ottobock team in Cappagh Hospital.

When he arrived home with his new leg, the first thing he did was try to kick a football in the back garden of the family home.

An Irish and Geography teacher in Galway’s Bish by day, Alex began his journey as a para-athlete in 2018 and ran his first race just six weeks after starting to train with his coach Brendan Glynn.

In the past 6 years Alex has learned how to walk, how to run and how to sprint.

Filmed over 18 months, this documentary features personal archive of Alex’s journey to become Ireland’s first bladerunner.

This is a story about persistence, grit and a refusal to give up.

Misneach – Alex Lee airs on Wednesday 18th January 2023 at 9.30pm on TG4 and on the TG4 Player
