Sligo Rovers snap up services of Gary Boylan

Sligo Rovers have announced the signing of Gary Boylan until the end of the 2023 Premier Division season.

Mayo born Boylan is a versatile player who can play in a number of positions but is generally regarded as a full back, a position he has occupied with his three previous clubs.

His arrival at the Showgrounds means he is in fact his returning to his first club having joined the clubs academy in 2013 and then going on to make over 100 appearances for the Bit O’ Red from 2014 to 2019.

He moved to Cork City in 2019 after which he took a career break before joining Galway United in January 2021.

He ended up going on loan to Finn Harps for the last six months of the 2022 season.

He played alongside John Russell in his first spell at the Showgrounds and now is reunited with his former team mate who was appointed manager of Rovers in May 2022.

“I am delighted to be back at Sligo Rovers again,” Boylan said as his return to Sligo was announced.

“I enjoyed every minute in my last spell at the club and, I know what it means to the supporters.

“I am really looking forward to the season ahead and hopefully getting the club back into the European places again.”

Sligo Rovers Manager John Russell is equally enthused about the return of Boylan to the Showgrounds and said: “Gary is two footed, aggressive in the way he defends, and has the ability to get forward and put dangerous crosses into the box.

"It’s important to have the right type of people coming into the club and for that reason I think Gary is an excellent addition to the squad.

"All the staff and I are looking forward to working with him.”
