It was Cup Quarter-Finals time for the Under-17 Women and Men last weekend but we did have some league action at Under-17 level with a couple of games played out in the WNL Tier 2 League.

2022 U17 Cup Quarter-Finals

Only one quarter-final managed to avoid going into extra-time on the weekend. Finn Harps had to come through a Preliminary Round where they defeated Dundalk 3-2 after extra-time which set up a clash against St. Patrick’s Athletic but that is where their cup hopes ended.

The Saints defeated Harps 4-1 in normal time to book a place in the semi-finals. Goals from Brian Moore, Sean Hayden and a brace from Mason Melia were enough to see off the Donegal challenge. Aaron McLaughlin was the scorer of Harps only goal.

Shelbourne and Bohemians played out an entertaining 3-3 draw in the AUL. Gavin Hodgins gave Shels an early lead before Peter Grogan levelled early in the second-half. The Gypsies then took the lead through Sean McCarthy.

That lead only lasted three minutes as Hodgins scored his and Shels second. Sean Cummins then gave the Reds the lead once more before James Bailey equalised sending the game into extra-time. There were no more goals to be had and ultimately Shelbourne progressed 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out.

Waterford and Cork City also ended up in a dreaded penalty shoot-out after drawing 1-1 after extra-time. Calum Costello gave the Blues a 36th minute lead before Eanna Fitzgerald levelled the game up with 16 to go. The Rebel Army went on to knock Waterford out on penos.

The final game of the round saw Athlone Town host Shamrock Rovers. The sides were level 1-1 at full-time but Athlone avoided any need for penos by scoring twice in extra-time to knock the Hoops out of the cup.

2022 Women’s U17 Cup Quarter-Finals

A early second-half brace from Lauryn McCabe for Shamrock Rovers was enough to see past Cork City as the Hoops progressed to the cup semi-finals.

Wexford progressed to the next round in similar fashion as a second-half double from Nicole Delaney meant Bohemians would be leaving the cup at the Quarter-Final stage.

Goals galore in Athlone, as the Town defeated Peamount United in a 5-3 goal-fest. Shelbourne and Donegal League draw 1-1 after extra-time before an epic penalty shootout saw the Reds progress 9-8.

2022 Women’s U17 League Tier 2

Waterford moved level with Shamrock Rovers at the top of Tier 2 after a 4-3 win over Carlow-Kilkenny. Waterford raced into a first-half 3-0 lead thanks to a Catheranne Fitzgerald brace before Sophie Power made it 4-0 on 59 minutes.

Carlow then responded with a Lia O’Brien goal on 63 before a late brace from Mary Bolger moved the home side to within a goal before time ran out.

Dundalk leapfrogged Galway and Bohemians after the Lilywhites recorded a 4-1 away win over the Tribeswomen. A double from Grace Kelly and one a piece from Sarah Byrne and Ellie Smyth was enough to seal all three points.
