Wigan sign McGrath on deadline day
Wigan Athletic have announced the deadline day signing of Jamie McGrath from St Mirren for an undisclosed fee.
He has penned a two-and-a-half-year deal with the Latics. McGrath’s future had been up in the air recently, with Aberdeen and Hibernian heavily interested in the Republic of Ireland international.
The Athboy native (25) impressed during his two-year stint with St Mirren. McGrath made 79 appearances scoring 20 goals and registering 7 assists for the Buddies.
The former Cherry Orchard player scored three goals this season before making the move to England.
McGrath scooped the clubs Player of the Year award last season after scoring 17 goals for Jim Goodwin’s charges and earned international recognition going on to earn six caps for Stephen Kenny’s Republic of Ireland side.
The midfielder made his international debut against Andorra last summer before making his first international start away to Portugal, where he assisted John Egan’s opener.
The 25-year-old earned his stripes in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division making his St Patrick’s Athletic debut at age 17. McGrath went on to win the club’s Young Player of the Year in 2016.
From there he joined up Kenny at Dundalk in January 2017. He won back-to-back League of Ireland Premier Division titles at Oriel Park before moving to St Mirren in January 2020.
McGrath will link up with Republic of Ireland teammates James McClean and Will Keane at the DW Stadium as the Tics look to boost their promotion push back to the Sky Bet Championship.
The Lancashire side are currently second in League One, one point behind Rotherham United with two games in hand.
The 2013 FA Cup winners are also a point clear of Sunderland in the automatic promotion places with four games in hand on the Black Cats.
