Singing section set for new South Stand in Tallaght Stadium

It is the ten year anniversary for Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght. When the Hoops played their first game at the venue in March 2009 against Sligo Rovers, the stadium had a capacity of 3,000, which increased to 6,000 by the end of their first campaign in the Dublin 24 venue.

For this upcoming season, the capacity is increased to 8,000 with the addition of the new South Stand which was completed in November of last year.

With the new stand set to be officially opened for the upcoming campaign, the club have instigated new arrangements for supporters visiting the stadium.

From the season opener in the stadium – against Derry City on Friday 22 February – the more ‘vocal’ Rovers supporters, including the SRFC Ultras, will move to the new singing section in the South Stand.

Previously the singing section was based below the TV gantry in the East Stand but the club hope that the new arrangements will provide more colour and atmosphere to the stadium.

The main West Stand will now be for home supporters only. Away fans, who previously were positioned at ‘The Square’ end of the main stand, will now watch the game from the opposite side of the ground in the East Stand.

They will be positioned at ‘The Square’ end of this stand with away supporters entering the ground through the turnstiles adjacent to that end of the ground.

When Zenit St. Petersburg played in Tallaght in the Europa League in 2016 against Dundalk this is where the away supporters were positioned.

South Dublin County Council are currently developing proposals for a fourth stand at the venue to bring the capacity up to 10,000, along with additional works to the main West Stand as reported by extratime.ie back in December (see here).
