Byrne makes the move to Tolka Park from Tallaght

Shelbourne have announced the signing of defender Luke Byrne. The former Shamrock Rovers and Bohemians player makes the move to Tolka Park as Ian Morris assembles an impressive Shels squad for their First Division campaign. 

The 25-year-old player spent the last five years in Tallaght – he was the longest serving player in last season’s Rovers squad – playing in 105 competitive matches for the Hoops.

Predominantly used as a left-back, Byrne has also occasionally been deployed as a centre-half and on the left side of a back-three in recent years.

The former St. Kevin’s underage player overcome a series knee injury suffered in Turner’s Cross early in the 2016 but he has had limited game time on his return.

A different injury curtailed his game time last season and he was limited to making 13 appearances in the league for the Hoops.

Previous to his time at Rovers, Byrne made 48 appearances for Bohemians before making a controversial move from the Gypsies to Rovers. The defender also was part of the coaching team with Rovers under-15 National League team last season.

Byrne is yet another experienced player that Ian Morris has added to the Reds squad.

With Oscar Brennan, Ryan Brennan, Conan Byrne, Dan Byrne and Ciarán Kilduff all making the move to Tolka Park, Shels are giving themselves every chance of returning to the Premier Division for the first time since 2013. 

Shels also announced the signing of Darragh Noone from Bray Wanderers on Tuesday.
