FIFA announce World Cup awards for Russia 2018 tournament

Following France's World Cup Final win in Moscow, FIFA announced their awards for the tournament.

Ahead of Hugo Lloris lifting the World Cup trophy in the rain in the Luzhniki Stadium, Luka Modric accepted the Golden Ball awarded to the best player of the tournament. 

The Silver Ball went to Eden Hazard who also won a bronze medal with Belgium at Russia 2018. 

Antoine Griezmann had a very successful day. To go with his World Cup Winners medal, he got the Bronze Ball for third best player in the tournament. 

Also his goal in the final, his fourth of the tournament, helped him to the Silver Boot behind Golden Boot winner Harry Kane. The England striker's six goals earned him that award.

Griezmann’s two assists in the tournament elevated the Frenchman above Bronze Boot winner Romelu Lukaku who scored four times but had only one assist.

Kylian Mbappe picked won the Young Player of the tournament, while Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois won the Golden Glove Award for best ‘keeper at this World Cup.

Bar the top scorer competition, all those awards were decided by the FIFA Technical Study Group (TSG) with the player of the tournament awards based on a ranking compiled by the TSG. 

Carlos Alberto Parreira, who guided Brazil to the 1994 World Cup title, was head of the group, working alongside former FIFA World Player of the Year Marco van Basten.

Serbian Bora Milutinovic who managed five different nations in five consecutive World Cups, FIFA u17 World Cup winning manager from Nigeria Emmanuel Amunike and ex-Scotland manager Andy Roxburgh made up the rest of the group.



Rounding off the awards, after a World Cup they will likely want to forget Spain picked up the FIFA Fair Play Award.

Their reward is the Fair Play Trophy and a medal for each player and official. Spain will also receive a voucher for $50,000 worth of football equipment to be used for youth football development.
