Derry City fixtures postponed due to underage call ups

Next week’s Derry City fixtures have been postponed due to international calls up for players to the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland under age international squads.

While this Friday’s fixture with Bray Wanderers on the Bogside goes ahead, Bank Holiday Monday’s home game on 19 March against Dundalk and the trip to Cork City originally scheduled for 23 March have both been pushed out several weeks due to international commitments for a number of City’s players.

Dundalk will now visit the Brandywell on Monday 14 May, while Kenny Sheils will bring his team on the long journey to Cork to take on the league champions on Monday 4 June.

The Candystripes got a win in their delayed first fixture at the redeveloped Brandywell on Monday night, in what was an impressive 5-0 win over Limerick (see match report here).

Rory Hale hit a hat-trick in that game, with Ronan Curtis also on the scoresheet. Both players have been called up by Noel King for the upcoming Republic of Ireland u21 game against Azerbaijan.

Conor McDermott and Jamie McDonagh are amongst the players called up in Ian Baraclough’s Northern Ireland squad for their u21 fixtures against Spain (22 March) and Iceland (26 March) in UEFA u21 Championship 2019 qualification.

“We will definitely need to be at our best for these two games against quality opposition,” said Baraclough speaking to Irishfa.com.

“Spain were narrowly beaten by Germany in the final of this competition last year and have players with significant La Liga experience with some of the leading Spanish clubs.”
