Wexford Youths' title-winning manager Laura Heffernan steps down

Wexford Youths have parted company with their title-winning manager Laura Heffernan by mutual consent.

Youths sealed a third Women's National League title last Saturday evening thanks to a 2-0 win over second-placed Peamount United at Ferrycarrig Park.

However after discussions between Heffernan and the club, the former WNL Cup-winning player has decided to relinquish her position with immediate effect.

“It is with deep regret and a heavy heart that I have decided to step away from my role with Wexford Youths Women,” Heffernan said in a statement released on Twitter.

“Following an end of season review it was quite clear that the players, club and management had very different views on the best way forward for 2018.

“This isn't a decision I have taken lightly by any means but the welfare of the club is more important than my personal progression.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff involved last season for their commitment and look forward to working with you all again sometime in the future.”

The club confirmed the news, adding: “the process to find a new manager will commence shortly.”

Heffernan's decision appears to have been unexpected as she spoke confidently about the club's future on the Extratime.ie Sportscast as recently as Wednesday.

The Wexford native had only taken on the head coach at the beginning of the year after returning from a stint in the US with Abbey Villa.

She had been part of the backroom team under Will Doyle that helped Wexford to the Women's National League title in 2015-16.
