Goalkeeper Gleeson returns to Galway

Galway United have announced that goalkeeper Connor Gleeson has re-signed for the club ahead of their 2016 Premier Division campaign.

The 22-year-old stopper returns to Eamonn Deacy Park after a short spell with First Division outfit Athlone Town, where he acted as second choice ‘keeper to Patrick Dunican.

Dunmore native Gleeson played a pivotal role in Galway United’s promotion to the Premier Division in 2014, playing on 29 occasions.

Gleeson failed to consolidate his place in Tommy Dunne’s side last season, making only nine appearances prior to his move to Athlone in July.

The new signing will find it tough to forge his way into Tommy Dunne’s team ahead of their opening league encounter in Inchicore against St. Patrick’s Athletic, and beyond, as he is one of three ‘keepers at the manager’s disposal.

Last season’s first choice goalkeeper Conor Winn has re-signed for the Tribesmen, along with Kevin Horgan, who captained the club’s under-19 team last year.

Speaking to the club’s website following the conclusion of the deal, Tommy Dunne was pleased to strengthen his options at the back with the acquisition of Gleeson.

“Connor is another welcome addition to our squad,” Dunne said.

“He was excellent for us in the First Division. When we were promoted to the Premier Division, I think he lost his confidence a bit. Now he has the opportunity to work his way back into the team again.”

“I wanted to have quality and competition in every position. There has to be a lively competitiveness in the squad if we’re going to push on as a club.”
