Republic of Ireland to face Slovakia in May

The Republic of Ireland will take on Slovakia in a 'Three' International Friendly at Aviva Stadium on Tuesday, March 29 and the game will be free to FAI Season Ticket holders.

Slovakia are no strangers to Ireland in recent years after being drawn in the same group for both the 2008 and 2012 Euro qualifying campaigns.

In the 2008 campaign Steve Staunton’s charges won 1-0 in Croke Park before drawing 2-2 in Bratislava. Giovanni Trapattoni was less successful in the 2012 campaign against the Slovaks with a 1-1 away draw followed by a 0-0 stalemate in the Aviva Stadium.

The friendly game, the fifth encounter between the sides, will cap off an Easter week that also sees Ireland host Switzerland at Aviva Stadium on Friday, March 25.

Slovakia, who are 26th in the FIFA World Rankings, qualified for UEFA EURO 2016 after finishing second in Group C and were paired with England, Wales, and Russia for next summer's finals.

It is expected the FAI will announce another friendly match scheduled to be played in May as Martin O’Neill prepares his side for Euro 2016.

O’Neill discovered last Saturday at a draw in Paris that they would be in Group E at EURO 2016 where they will face Sweden, Belgium, and Italy.
