O'Connell signs for Cork City
Cork City today announced the signing of winger Danny O’Connell from local Munster Senior League side Carrigaline United this morning.
The 20 year old has previously played big games in Turners Cross in the past having represented the Ireland Amateur side in a friendly back in March against Poland.
The player has been involved with the City squad since back in preseason where he featured against Athlone Town during City’s trip up to Roscommon.
More recently he featured against a Liverpool XI in the Cross and it is on the back of such performances that manager John Caulfield has decided to sign the player who will now go into the squad for the game against Dundalk this Sunday that is dependent on whether or not the Lilywhites can progress against Bate tomorrow night. If Dundalk progress then it will be the home game against Bohemians on the 31st of July that could see his potential debut.
Speaking to CorkCityFC.ie after putting pen to paper, O’Connell expressed his desire to do well for his new side.
“I am absolutely delighted to be joining Cork City and I was thrilled when John gave me the news. I’ve been training away with the club and have really enjoyed it; the set-up is brilliant and there is a great bunch of lads here. I just have to work hard in training, try and work my way into the squad and be ready to take my chance.”
He will be the second signing for John Caulfield this transfer window on the back of the signing of Steven Beattie from Sligo Rovers at the start of the month and the manager also spoke to the club’s official website about the importance of these kind of signings – Cork signed Connor Ellis and Conor McCarthy last week with the former making his first team debut this past weekend as a late substitute against Longford Town.
“Bringing young players through from our underage set-up and giving talented local players the chance to play at the highest level is a crucial part of the ethos of this club. Danny, Connor and Conor have all done well in training with us over a period of time, and will be good additions to our squad.”
