Mylod gearing up for Dundalk challenge
Ian Mylod the ex-Cork City U19 striker and now current UCC striker will be hoping for his UCC side to progress to the semi-finals of the EA Sports Cup when they meet current league and EA Sports Cup holders Dundalk this Monday with an 8pm kick-off as he spoke to extratime.ie.
UCC have progressed to this stage having defeated two SSE Airtricity League First Division sides in Wexford Youths and Cobh Ramblers. The Knockraha native scored the decisive goals in the 2-1 victory over Wexford Youths in Ferrycarrig Park last March. He’s hoping for a repeat of that performance this week.
“It would be great but to be honest they’re two different types of opposition. That night we went up to Wexford with a second string side having only 13 players with injuries and we didn’t expect to get much.
“I suppose it’s a similar enough scenario to the Dundalk game this week except we know that we are playing the best team in the country and sure anything could happen.”
Many of the UCC team have seen Dundalk play in recent weeks with many having attended the Cork City v Dundalk game in the Cross in which Dundalk emerged victorious 2-1. It’s expected Dundalk will field a weakened team for the clash but that won’t deter Mylod and the other Students from believing they have the ability to create a cup exit.
“We’ve watched videos of them and we know what they are capable of when given time. Though hopefully we’ll get good support from Cork people especially since City don’t play until the following day and this could play its part on the night. It might even make an ordinary night into an historic night. It was great to have the support a few weeks back when defeating Ramblers with the crowd in the Mardyke and we’re hoping for something similar Monday.”
Of course with such a big game in the EA Sports Cup announced a few weeks back the Students were affected with the hype and as a result they let slip a few games in the Munster Senior League as they hoped to regain the league.
“I suppose we all got caught up in a little bit of the hype, but we were carrying injuries and also we had study month and exams so that could have been a possible reason for the drop in form. However that won’t be an excuse for Monday as it will be just 11 players competing against 11 players on the pitch and hopefully something could happen.”
