O'Flynn signs back as pre-season draws nearer

Cork City has today announced that striker John O’Flynn has signed back with the club for the 2015 season. He returned to the club last July following a spell in England with both Barnet and Exeter City.

O’Flynn made 15 appearances last season for Cork City mainly positioned on the right wing scoring once in the club’s 1-0 victory over Derry City last August. O’Flynn spoke of his delight to Corkcityfc.ie shortly after putting pen to paper with the Runners Up in the 2014 Premier Division.

“I’m delighted; John is assembling a good squad and it is good to be a part of it again. I got a good taste of it last year and hopefully we can kick on next season and get the prize that we all want. It is a better squad than last year, and I think you need that for the amount of games we will have.

“Having played the majority of games last season on the right wing owing to the form of Mark O’Sullivan up front O’Flynn hopes to impress in pre-season and possibly stake a claim for a position up front. “I played a lot on the wing since I came back, but me and John have chatted and it will be more of a centre forward role next year. I’m looking forward to getting back in for pre-season, working hard and we’ll see where we go from there.”

Manager, John Caulfield has now signed 19 players ahead of the coming season and has spent a considerable amount of time since the season ended in improving the attacking side of the team following the signing of Kieran Djilali and Karl Sheppard from Sligo Rovers and Shamrock Rovers respectively.

The former UCC boss was delighted with O’Flynn signing back today, to further boost the attacking options at the club when speaking to the club website.

“It’s great to get John signed back. In the system we played last year, he was playing on the right side of the front three, which was a difficult position for him. We’ve had a good chat about it, it’s an area that we needed to strengthen and I have brought in a lot more attacking options this year, which means that hopefully we will be able to play with two up front.”

Cork City last year played a 4-2-3-1 formation to great effect against other teams but Caulfield hinted this morning that there will be a change in the formation ahead of the season’s start. This formation should suit O’Flynn as Caulfield indicating the possibility of City playing two up front this season instead of the one up top like they did on many occasions last season.

“As we all know, his goal scoring pedigree is phenomenal for this club and I am hoping that, with a good pre-season behind him and a change in formation, he will start getting the goals that we hope will help us challenge next season.”
