McSweeney is staying on at Turner's Cross

Cork City today announced that Michael McSweeney has signed back for the 2015 season. The former UCC and Mervue United player only joined the club last July having impressed on trial with the club and in a mid-season friendly against Championship side Birmingham City.

McSweeney returned to Ireland following time in Australia and quickly impressed everybody with his attitude something that manager John Caulfield made sure to comment on.

“When Michael came in this year, no-one really knew him. I obviously knew him well from UCC, and he then went to Mervue under Johnny Glynn and got a lot of experience. He’s very fit, very athletic and a good defender. When he came in last year, he did really well against some very good players.”

He went on to make nine appearances following his transfer and even started the final game of the season against Dundalk up in Oriel Park. He’s hoping that a full pre season will help him get more game time something he mentioned today saying “I’m hoping to get a good pre-season under my belt and hopefully give John something to think about ahead of the start of the season.”

John Caulfield has now 17 players at his disposal for the coming season following the recent signings and the Cork bossis pleased with McSweeney signing ahead of a season that promises European football.

“It’s important for us to have good defenders and have a strong squad, and I feel Michael deserved to get a contract after how he did in 2014. He’s a no fuss type of guy; you ask him to come in and do a job and he is cool as a breeze, he’ll just go in and do what you’ve asked him to do. With the number of games we will have in 2015, we need a strong squad and we need guys who can come in and make sure they will keep the performance level high.”

The Cork native is full of ambition for the coming season mentioning to corkcityfc.ie that he hopes that the club can go one step further and improve on this season’s second place finish.

“You always want to improve, and improving on second place means winning the league, so that is our goal for next year, along with doing as well as we can in the other competitions. Our mentality last year was to go out and try to win every game, and it will be the same again in 2015.”
