Murray relieved with late strike to secure draw

On Friday night saw Cork City stalwart Dan Murray score his first goal for the club since re-signing under Tommy Dunne back in 2012 from Shamrock Rovers. His late strike ensured that City remain in the Cup after his late goalmouth scramble cancelled out Dinny Corcoran’s earlier goal.

Extratime.ie caught up with the club’s all time leading European goal scorer to ask how it felt to score his first goal for the club since re-signing and to ensure Cork City stayed in the Cup.

“Long overdue, good time to score I suppose and we’re still in the cup which is the main thing. One of the only things we can bring out of the game. We’ve another big game and another great chance of going into the quarter-final.”

Bohemians appear to be a bit of a bogey side for the club having been unable to defeat them in the three occasions the two sides played this season.

“They seem to up their game against us. There strong and well organised. They’re aggressive and play a direct style. We found it tough every time we played them and Monday night will be no different.”

Murray doesn’t believe fatigue was a factor in his side’s poor opening half performance which they rescued by way of the late goal.

“Take any chance to stay in the cup; it’s given us the best opportunity to get through to the quarter-final. Best keep playing games and keep on the momentum this season that has happened most weeks.

“It could have been 3-3 at half time with all the goals. It was a good cup tie. We took some of the momentum with us after scoring so late to force the replay.”

It was put to the Cork defender what was the atmosphere like in the dressing room after the game in which they only narrowly avoided defeat.

”Disappointment, we didn’t think we played particularly well, they dictated a lot of the game and we got another game on Monday to put things right and we probably got lucky to remain in the cup.”

Dan Murray will be hoping that this will not be the last of the goals he scores this season as his side have aspirations of both league and cup glory this season.
