Lenihan dreams to come through as Cork accept second bid

Following his side’s 2-2 draw with Bohemians in the FAI Ford Cup, current man of the moment Brian Lenihan spoke to the press on his upcoming move to England.

With Cork City confirming they have accepted a bid from a second club, Lenihan’s destination remains unclear as the player confirmed he will be meeting Brighton shortly.

“Sunday I think, going to be heading over to meet with Brighton, I’m not really sure how it will go.”

He will be fulfilling one of his childhood dreams when he signs cross channel as he said, “All I ever wanted was to play football over in England, But I’ve really enjoyed it over here. I haven’t given it much thought obviously because we’ve been heavily involved but now I know I’m going over I’m really looking forward to it.”

Yet he admits he has enjoyed his time on Leeside even though there were some tough moments over the past year with various injuries preventing him from taking to the playing field.

“Last season I made three appearances, all sub appearances, one of those for a minute or a minute and a half. End of last season I was thinking how I was going to push on or even get into the team. But I always thought I would get away and now I’m happy.”

He admitted that he was surprised at the position he played in the City side this season considering he had made his name underage with College Corinthians as a midfielder.

“Big surprise, all the way up I was a right mid but John put me in right back and this season it has worked so far and hopefully I can keep improving”.

Yet he appears to enjoy the position and when questioned as to where he would like to play on his new team he said “I see my future at right back but if somebody else wants to play me in midfield I’ll play there.”

This down to earth attitude shines through Lenihan who showed his honesty when asked what is it like to be going to England he replied, “It will be different to me; I still don’t believe I’m going until I’ve signed a contract. So I can’t get too excited yet.”

Lenihan was asked how the recent months of speculation has affected him when clubs from Arsenal to Hull have been mentioned.

“It was difficult and I kept my concentration on Cork City, this helped me. I knew myself some clubs were accurate and some made up with people going are you joining this team and that team.”

Since Brighton are the rumoured frontrunners for his signature it is interesting to note that Lenihan once played in the Annex stadium.

“I enjoyed it. It was a really nice place.”

Once suspects that this will be the final interview with Brian Lenihan in a Cork City jersey on these shores before he goes cross-channel.
