Elding parts ways with Cork City

Cork City have today confirmed that striker Anthony Elding has left the club with his contract cancelled by mutual consent.

Elding, who joined Sligo Rovers from Grimsby Town at the start of the 2013 season, blasted onto the League of Ireland scene, scoring six times in five games and ultimately notched up 19 goals at his time with the Bit O'Red.

After an eventful first season in the League of Ireland culminating in scoring a dramatic FAI Cup Final winning goal, Anthony Elding swapped Sligo Rovers for Cork City but only seven months into his term on Leeside, the Englishman has departed having started two League games and two EA Sports Cup fixtures.

Speaking to CorkCityFC.ie, Elding said: “I would like to thank everyone at the club for their support since I signed. Things have not worked out as we would have hoped, but sometimes that happens in football. I would also like to give a special mention to Timmy Murphy for helping myself and my family settle in. I want to wish the club the very best of luck for the rest of the season and for the future.”

In other Cork City news, Brian Lenihan has been called up to the Republic of Ireland Under 21 squad. Manager Noel King has called Lenihan into his squad for the friendly fixture against the Qatar Olympic squad, which will take place in Aachen in Germany on Saturday, May 24th.
