Elding swaps Sligo Rovers for Cork City

After an eventful first season in the League of Ireland culminating in scoring a dramatic FAI Cup Final winning goal, Anthony Elding is swapping Sligo Rovers for Cork City. The Leesiders have announced they have captured the signature of the 31 year old Englishman.

Elding, who joined Sligo Rovers from Grimsby Town at the start of the 2013 season, blasted onto the scene, scoring six times in five games and ultimately notched up 19 goals at his time with the Bit O'Red.

New Cork City manager John Caulfield is delighted to have brought the big target man to Turner's Cross.

“Anthony scored 19 goals last year and while people will remember him for the winning goal in the FAI Cup final, I remember him getting lots of great goals in the league throughout the season,” Caulfield said.

“He’s a big target man. Again, it’s showing the club’s intentions of being competitive and being up near the top. We want to win things and every time I spoke to him, it was clear that he wanted to come to the club. He’s a winner, and he’s the type of player we’re looking for.”

Speaking to CorkCityFC.ie, Caulfield added: “When I first contacted him, we seemed to strike a bond straight away. He came down to Cork and saw the facilities – the UCC Mardyke, the training ground and he knows Turner’s Cross.

“He could see the potential and he bought into that. I enjoyed his enthusiasm; he promised me that he would score loads of goals and I expect him to do just that.”
