Stephen’s Biography

Stephen started his career in the League of Ireland with Bohemians and scored twice on his debut in an FAI Cup match against Skerries Town on 15 August 2003. In a three year spell at Dalymount Park he scored 26 goals in 93 league appearances, signing for Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 2007.

Stephen went on to make over two hundred appearances for Wolves over the course of the eight seasons at the club as he was with the club as they were promoted to and relegated from the Premier League. His final year at the club saw him go out on loan to Brighton & Hove Albion for the 2013/14 season, where he was nearly ever present as he made forty-four appearances and scored four goals in the Championship.

Despite Brighton hoping to sign him permanently, Stephen joined Burnley, then in the Premier League, ahead of the 2014/15 season in August 2014. Stephen left Burnley in 2019 before spending one season at Stoke City before also leaving that club.

Capped for the Republic of Ireland at Schoolboy level, Stephen won his first Under 19 cap in August 2003 and scored hat-trick the following month in a European qualifier against San Marino. He won his first senior international cap against Northern Ireland on 24 May 2011. Ahead of the 2016 European Championship, he has 33 caps and 3 goals to his name. He was included in the Republic of Ireland's final squad for the 2016 European Championship.
