Defender Paddy Barrett leaves Dundalk after three years

Dundalk have confirmed that defender Paddy Barrett is to depart the club after three seasons that's seen him win two league titles and the FAI Cup.

The Waterford native spent the final three months of the 2017 season on loan with his hometown club after slipping down the pecking order at Oriel Park.

He helped the Blues to secure the First Division title, their first in 15 years, and the sole promotion spot back to the top tier.

“Thanks to the players and fans an everyone at Dundalk FC for the past few years,” Barrett tweeted.

“Plenty Silverware and European nights that will never be forgotten. Wish you all the best, a great club with great people. Time for change.”

The 24-year-old played underage football with St Paul's and Southend United before moving to Scotland, where he had spells in the youth set-ups at Aberdeen and Dundee United.

He returned to Ireland in 2013 and signed with Waterford United before moving to Galway United ahead of the 2014 season, helping the Tribesmen to promotion via the play-offs.

His performances in maroon earned him the admiration of Stephen Kenny, who took him to Dundalk ahead of the 2015 season.
