Sadou Diallo out for at least six weeks
The Derry City midfielder suffered a knee ligament injury in a pre-season friendly against Finn Harps.
The 24-year-old could require surgery on his knee, putting him out for over two months.
This is a huge loss for Ruaidhri Higgins, as Diallo has played a pivotal role in the Candystripes’ midfield since signing from Forest Green Rovers in the summer of 2022.
Diallo sustained the injury in a friendly against Finn Harps. Derry won the match 2-0 but lost one of their key players.
With less than five minutes to go until the break, a rash challenge by a Harps player sparked a melee between both sets of players.
It was initially assumed that Diallo only had bruising on the top of his shinbone, but MRI’s confirm a tear in his meniscus as a result of the challenge.
He missed the Billy Kee Memorial Cup victory over Institute as a precautionary measure but will miss Derry’s first six to eight league games also.
The news comes as another blow to Derry’s preparations for the season ahead after assistant manager Paddy McLaughlin departed the club on Monday.
