Legends for a legend match - Castleisland Community College

Irish Football Legends are to descend upon Castleisland in County Kerry next month when they will play a charity match against the local side to honour one of the unsung Irish football legends.

The game titled “Legends for a legend” will see a selection of former Irish internationals take on a local Castleisland AFC selection. The match will mark the official opening of Georgie O'Callaghan Park, named in memory of O’Callaghan who was a major figurehead in football in the local town and who died in April 2018. 

O’Callaghan founded the Casteisland club and spent 45 years overseeing the club’s development and will forever be enshrined in the club’s legacy with the new facilities will be dedicated in his memory.

The game is due to take place on April 27 2019, which marks the one year anniversary of his death after a short illness. With a 3pm kick off the match will feature Irish legends team will be drawn from players from Italia '90, USA '94 and Korea/Japan 2002.

Irish stars including Paul McGrath, Ronnie Whelan, Ray Houghton, Kevin Sheedy, Mark Kinsella, Stephen Hunt and more will feature for the Irish Legends team against the Castleisland Select side on the new state of the art facility.

Tickets for the match are currently on sale via Eventbrite. The Legends game will be followed by a separate ticketed event that evening - a gala dinner with live music at the River Island Hotel, Castleisland.

RTÉ Soccer Commentator George Hamilton will MC the event, which includes a question and answer session with the Irish Legends. Tickets for the gala dinner will be available from Castleisland AFC officials.
