Republic of Ireland star Megan Campbell returns to training with Manchester City after 15-month lay-off

Republic of Ireland star Megan Campbell edged one step closer to ending her injury nightmare as she returned to training with Women’s Super League champions Manchester City.

The Drogheda native has spent the past 15 months out of action after rupturing her anterior cruciate ligament in a Champions League games against LSK Kvinner in November 2017.

That meant 25-year-old Campbell missed out almost all of the senior national team’s World Cup 2019 qualifying campaign, which ended in a third-place finish.

It’s been a long road to recovery for the former Raheny United and Florida State University left-back, and she tweeted her relief at getting back on the football field on Friday.

It was the second time Campbell had suffered a serious long-term injury, having only just recovered from a year out with successive ankle injuries, one of which required reconstructive surgery.

In an interview with.extratime.ie, shortly after helping City to win the FA Cup, Campbell spoke about her road to recovery first time around.
