Sligo Rovers sign Jamaican international Romeo Parkes from US side Pittsburgh Riverhounds

Sligo Rovers have unveiled the signing of Jamaican International Romeo Parkes from Pittsburgh Riverhounds in the United States.

The 28-year-old forward joins the Bit O’Red with four international caps to his name for the Caribbean nation.

Parkes, who was previously a member of the Jamaican under-23 side seeking qualification for the 2012 Olympic Games in London, has scored one senior international goal.

His solitary strike came in a three-nil friendly success over Cuba in 2015 as preparations ramped up for the 2015 Copa America.

Parkes’ arrival to the Showgrounds is Liam Buckley’s fourth acquisition of the winter transfer window.

“Romeo can play on the either wing or up front. He is technically very good, and I have to say I’m quite excited about him,” Buckley told the Bit o’ Red’s official website.

“He has over a decade in the game, which is important, and international experience. I think it’s a signing that could be really beneficial to us and a big attacking threat.

“He likes to take players on and make things happen with a goal in him. I know Romeo is thrilled with the opportunity to come over and play the game here.

“The deal was in theory done quite a while. He came across our radar and we feel he can be a good player in this league. We’ve secured a work permit this evening and it’s the first of what will be a number of signings.

“The Irish market is not like England or wherever else. It is a small pool of players and we’re still looking here, while working in a number of different markets to bring in other quality players.

“I have to stress patience, it’s isn’t going to happen straight away because as I’ve said before we are bringing in players to try to take the club to a higher level and not just for the sake of it.

“I’ve been at the club for a couple of months and I try to keep our transfer dealings very much low key until the deal is done.

“I can assure our fans that the committee, Dave Campbell and I are making progress. It takes time but we’re getting there.

“Romeo is going to be a player to bring something new to the Showgrounds and the league and we can’t wait for him to join us.”

Sligo kick-start their 2019 SSE Airtricity League campaign with an away clash against Dundalk at Oriel Park on February 15th.
