Rebekah Grant scores but disappointment for Irish quintet as Doncaster edged out in Deaf Futsal Champions League final in Germany

Rebekah Grant put her side in front but there was disappointment for the Irish quintet as Doncaster were beaten 3-1 by GTSV Essen in the Deaf Futsal Champions League final in Stuttgart.

City teammate Nathalie O’Brien, as well as Irish squad members Denise Doran, Catherine Grier and Laura Clarke, were also involved as home country advantage told for Essen.

Grant scored her sixth goal of the tournament but two goals in three minutes from Henrianne Jansen and Anja Marie Schorer turned the tie on its head.

The 17-year-old striker had scored five times in the 6-5 semi-final win over hosts Stuttgart, and had a chance to level when set up by O’Brien but, with the goal wide open, she missed the target.

Anna Antonova scored on the break with a minute-and-a-half remaining to seal the win for the German side.

All five Irish players were part of the squad that qualified for the 2019 World Cup after qualifying for the quarter-finals of the European Championships in Finland last month.
