Warrenpoint sign striker Duffy from Drogheda and Northern Ireland-eligible Chelsea goalkeeper Thompson

Warrenpoint Town have made an early move in the January transfer window with the triple signing of Lee Duffy, Jared Thompson and Hernany Macedo Marques.

Striker Duffy arrives from Drogheda United and keeper Thompson on loan from Chelsea’s underage set-up, while former St Patrick’s Athletic defender Macedo has most recently been in his native Brazil.

27-year-old Duffy played 18 times for the Boynesiders in 2018, scoring three times as Tim Clancy’s side reached the semi-finals of the play-offs before bowing out to Finn Harps.

It was the Meathman's second spell with his local club, having also lined out for Shelbourne, Longford Town and Wexford in the League of Ireland.

Swindon native Thompson, 19, is a former England under-17 international who played four times at the European Championships in Azerbaijan in 2016.

The keeper, who has represented Northern Ireland at underage level, arrives on loan until the end of the season in place of former Ireland under-21 cap Aaron McCarey, who has signed for Dundalk.

31-year-old Macedo Marques is a versatile defender who spent time on trial with Dundalk in 2012 while Warrenpoint manager Stephen McDonnell was a player at Oriel Park.

He left the club in pre-season after failing to secure a work permit, but signed terms with the Saints the following September, but only played two games before being released.

“It is good to get some business done early and the guys coming in will add a bit more experience to the squad,” manager Stephen McDonnell told the club’s official website.

“I’ve known two of the lads for a while and have had quite a bit of scouting done on all of them lately, so I know we have quality coming in too.

“We have to kick on and I believe these guys will help us do that in the second part of the season.”
